Default Gateway 420 XP 32 bit won't connect

I have been trying to get our older Gateway 420 PC (XP) to have internet. It was working before but I reinstalled windows and now it won't go online. We had a "SMC ethernet adapter before plugged into the modem via usb into the desktop. I was told by some that I needed to download new network or lan drivers for it. I've tried many and can't get them installed properly. We have other devices that connect just fine but not the PC. A computer friend of mine had me get another ethernet adapter and I installed it instead of the SMC one. I was able to go online but not a good connection. I've been trying to work with this for 2 days now with no luck. I just now fond a IntelPro 8019 network driver but it's hanging up and not installing properly. Don't know what else to do. Thanks for any help. Don't know what else to do.
