Default Games lagging over network

So I have two respectably fast computers running the game Command and Conquer Generals: Zero Hour (made in 2003) over a network, a buddy and I usually play the two of us versus 2 of the hard computer players.
During the peak of the game, it gets ridiculously slow lag, and I know its due to the network connection.
Both computers use 10/100 wired connections, and are connected via a Linksys 10/100 workgroup switch.
Is the switch my problem? Should I be using a 10/100 router instead?
