This only happens when i play high graphic games, i tried playing PES 2011 and it works fine.

Then I go to mafia 2 and after 1 minute the screen is pixelated by little squares and then black screen. Then a message comes up saying display driver has stopped working and has recovered.

Could it be that I am playing mafia 2 on steam and PES 2011 on my own computer?

Here is a blue screen message

i uninstalled the drivers for my ATI 3870 today so i dont have any drivers at the moment.

Well, first off you need to reinstall the drivers. Second, have you tried to turn down the graphic settings for mafia 2? also, I know that steam updates your games automatically, but just to be sure you should go into the game on steam and make sure it is up to date. Good luck

I doubt you will have a good time running mafia 2 on that card, I couldnt run it at full on my gtx 260.

What are your pc specs?

PC specs

M4a79xtd evo AM3 mobo
Antec 300 case with two fans in the front
ATI HD 3870 512mb
Phenom II x2 555
500 gb WD
2x2gb gskill ripjaws 1600mhz DDR3
Windows 7 ultimate 64bit

It was actually running mafia 2 pretty smooth at high settings for a week.
and i dont think its the graphic card overheating goes up to around 64 at full load

Although its pretty old had it for 2 years and was in my previous pc.

Either your card is overheating or it's dieing. Or a combination of both.

For example, a brand new card might idle at 30c and heat up to 70c and work fine. But after a year or 2 of fan wear and dust build-up and thermal paste drying out suddenly the card idles at 40c and it only works good up to 65c. If you clean the card up and replace the thermal paste an possibly the cooler it might go into remission if the card hasn't ran overly hot for to long.

And when I say overly hot I don't necessarily mean it's Maximum temperature. If your card ran at 40c at a 50% load new and a year later it was running at 50c at 50% load, then it's been running hotter than it should and it will die sooner than the slightly cooler card.
