My friends pc wont boot up we need something to repair it. My other friend is gonna lend us xp now i need some advice on what i should do to formatt it. I put this in the hardware part cause i think his hard drive's dead cause each time it boots up a blue screen of death appears. He doesnt tell me what appears i think he mentioned soemthing of a driver issue. But we want to try a software fix first please any help would be greatly appreciated. I never foramatted before in my life and i want to know what steps i should take and stuff like that.

It could be a lot of things, not just a bad hard drive. It could have possibly been a registry error ... oh, the list goes on.

Formatting is cake. Virtually stick the windows disk in and follow the directions. It comes to a point where it shows what exists on the drive (partitions), simply delete the current and go back over top of it.

It's that easy. Good luck.

look in these xp install guides
http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxppro/installxpcdoldhdd/indexfullpage.htm
http://www.tweakhound.com/xp/installxp/installXP1.htm
please note that windows xp setup cannot format existing partitions youll have to delete all of em and recreate or if theres more than one partition and you wanna just format the c: one (so important data on the other partitions wont be lost) then youll have to use a third party partition manager like acronis disk director suite/paragon partition manager/partition magic etc. , also if the windows cd dont have sp1 or sp2 integrated then its a good idea to integrate it before you install see this guide http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp
also might wanna integrate this update pack after
http://www.ryanvm.net/msfn/updatepack.html , keep us posted

oh dang at first i was going to use DriveScrubber but now that u tell me that xp can format ill just use that. My other friend got his xp xopy not to long ago im not sure if it has SP2 but i think it should.

theres an easy way to find out , just browse the cd and see if it have one of these files in its root folder
win51ip.SP1 - means it have sp1 integrated
win51ip.SP2 - means it have sp2 integrated
if none of these files exsist then it dont have any service pack integrated , having sp1 or sp2 integrated is important not only cuz it saves time cuz also without having sp integrated windows setup wont be able to create partition/s higher then 128gb (and alot of ppl have big hard drives)

my friends pc is 5 yrs old so i doubt his hard dirve is that big but i will intergrate the sp's before i install windows.
