formatting partition

Ok I have a 80gig hard drive working on a partition local disk c and formatted. Now that I added a 250gig hard drive it shows up as a local disk d partition. But I need to format it and everytime I try to, it doesn't work. I choose the ntfs file system and tried the quick format option too, but then after a while it says format did not complete correctly or something. Then I tried formatting without the quick format option. Left it on overnight and it never completed and still said formatting in the partition status. What could be wrong?

try running chkdsk on the troubled drive to see if there are any bad sectors, if so it may be the drive.
