Default Formatting a Hard Drive

Right. I just found a spare 250GB IDE Drive lying around. So I popped it in, booted up, Vista recognised the drive and displayed the product number etc and found drivers for it. I always get errors trying to format the disk. I've tried Windows Disk Management, Partition Magic, GParted and DOS. None of which can format the drive, it keeps giving me errors. Is there anything tlse that I could try to sort out this problem? It actually annoying me so **** much that I can't format a hard drive

try to recover any bad sectors using software. run a diagnostic with the manufacturer's tools.

Just tried that with no good results. Diagnostics couldn't even detect the drive, and chkdsk said that it had unrecoverable errors
