What brand was your hard drive?

If the next one doesn't work, it's probably something wrong with your windows disk.

Seagate

And actually that was the first thing I thought of and tried my friends Ultimate disk and got the same error so I was able to rule that one out.

I hope this next HDD works though

Its good you RMA the hard drive for sure. But you can install Windows on a disabled hard drive. After the instlation is done to the point of it's first reboot as soon as it shuts down go into bios and reenable the hard drive and when it boots up it will complete the install. I have had to do this on many older computers.
