Fan out of control

Hi,

I just recently replaced my CPU on my desktop, and things have been weird lately.

The computer turns on, and I can access all the files on my harddrive as usual. But my fan just goes wild, like a turbo engine. The computer seems to shut itself off every once in a while, thinking that the computer is overheating (because of the way the fan is behaving.
I have yet to apply the thermal paste, so I will be doing that soon. But surely this can't be simply because I didn't add the paste...?

The fan slowly speeds up over the course of rebooting. Once it reaches max rpm, it shuts the entire thing off.

Please help?
