I have 4 hard drives and one of them failed the other day when I was trying to play a video clip. When trying to play it with WMP9 it would freeze so then I had to go into ‘task manager’ and ‘end the process’. I did this 2 times and then the 3rd time my computer shut down and went into a looped re-boot mode.
PC Boot would be good, the windows logo screen would come up, but then it would disappear and a blue error screen would come up for a split second. I have not been able to see what the specific error as the computer goes to re-boot but have seen it say ‘windows has been halted to prevent damage from occurring to your computer’ or something like that.
I was very worried in the beginning but after unplugging each HD, I have concluded which HD is the cause. So at least everything else works ok, whew!
One other thing to mention is that the failing HD is a Maxtor 160Gig SATA drive filled with only 250MB empty. IÂ’m thinking this is a cause but not sure.
Does anyone know of something I could try to get this drive working again? I do need the information on it.
Thanks in advance

PS – after this scare I did a major back-up of all other important info I could access.

get into c:\windows\minidump and rar/zip all files , upload to www.mytempdir.com and provide link , ill analyze the recent and let you know , bsod logs are kept in that folder and by default settings windows is set to restart on a bsod , i suggest youll test that hd with powermax to be 100% sure if its bad or not, report back with results then well see

for cd (burn as disc image)
http://downloads.maxtor.com/downloads/_files/maxtor/en_us/downloads/PwrMaxEn.iso
or for floppy (run to create)
http://downloads.maxtor.com/downloads/_files/maxtor/en_us/downloads/powermax.exe
user guide
http://www.maxtor.com/_files/maxtor/en_us/documentation/manuals/powermax_guide_en.pdf

how to burn as disc image
with nero - in menu goto recorder-->burn image
with nero express - click "disc image or saved project"
with imgburn - in menu goto file-->browse , click the play button to start burning (insert a blank cd first otherwise it will be grayed out)
you can get it from http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/imgburn.cfm

thank you for your tips!!
sorry i've taken sooo long to respond but was busy at work then had a long vacation.
anyway, i just ran powermax and it determined that my drive was screwed and gave me 'diagnostics error - de9aa975'. i found this page
http://maxtor.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/maxtor.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=538
on the error codes and that code above is not really an error code at all, only a reference.
in powermax i did the following,
checked the 'installation confirmation' - that passed
checked the 'basic quick test' - full read scan was recommended
checked the 'advanced test (full read scan)' and after 10 seconds it came back with the diagnostics code and said that 'this drive is failing and must be replaced, if you do not have a recent backup, then you should make one now blah blah blah'.
so now the question is, is there anyway that i can use data recovery software to get any data back? otherwise its 200gigs of stuff gonzo.
any recommendations?
