external HDD having connection difficulty

Hi, I have just purchased an external 3.5 inches HDD.
The package has included a PSU, a Case, and a Firewire to USB connector.

When I plugged the HDD to my XP (SP2), there was an alert saying that the USB port can be used, it may have been defected.

I have plugged my USB Flash drive, and it works.

I need your help!

Do I have to install driver for firewire?

yeah if there is a driver for the harddrive then try that and let us know.

The package has included a driver disc for USB 2.0, but it has specified to be installed in Win98 only.
I am using XP SP2, though my last windows update was already a year ago.
