I have a standard 80 gig Western Digital hard drive which I converted to an external hard drive with an ide-to-usb kit. It ran on my old laptop, which had XP installed. That laptop has since stopped working, and I want to move the files over to my Vista machine. Whenever I plug in the harddrive and attempt to find it in "Computer," the window freezes and says "not responding" until I unplug it. It just won't recognize the hard drive or let me explore it at all. Any ideas?

Do you have the proper chipset drivers installed? Did it come with any software that needed to be installed? Are you connecting it directly to the PC and not to a USB Hub?

The chipset for the PC is up to date on drivers. There was no software included, only cables. It is hooked directly into a usb port on the pc, not a usb hub.
