Default Configuring a Workstation

Hi, my dad has just recieved a sony wide-screen laptop and a external lcd monitor. Both work wonderfully. We have the laptop operating most of the time in a dock. The problems lie in the different resolutions for different screen ratios (the lcd ext. monitor is a regular screen and the laptop is in a wide screen format). Is there anyway to configure the laptop to switch to a wide-screen format when it is "un-docked"? I know the way of gong into the display settings but that is too much of a hassel. Even a simple program woud be satifactory. Thanks for all assistance realting to this problem.
