I have a western digital Elements external hard drive with bad sectors. It spins ok but when I try to reformat it stops after a few hours with an I/O error..I think it can be saved (the hard drive, not the data). I tried hdd regenerator which works but it's to slow- it's a 1 TB drive and would take about 30 years to fix with that program. Is it worth trying to save? It's only 2 years old. I used it for a backup then locked it away for 2 years; when I dug it out to synch the backup it had these problems so I've only used it a few times.

Yes, I did a chkdsk and a defrag and I tried the WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic and Quick formatter. The format gets interrupted by the I/O error and the diagnostic program doesn't complete the tests, reporting "too many bad sectors".

I'm thinking about trying Spinrite, but it seems complicated.
