Default Explanation? Or dying dvd burner?

Me and my friend burn a lot of dvds, in the thousands. After a few months and a lot of burning the dvd burner slows down sometimes to at least half the speed it usually burns dvds. Is it telling me that it's slowly dying or could it be something else?

When it starts to slow down, I usually buy a new one if I can't fix it.
