May i suggest a Behringer or Nady mini mixer. I own a Nady (not for this reason although i own Sennheiser HD 4XX's and understand your issue) but it boosts decibels-a-plenty with no annoying gain or distortions of any kind (aboslutely ZERO buzz) and you can get one south of $25 plus its pretty compact.
This is where I got mine. Best site reliability for the price.
