dvd-rom commited suicide

Ok so i booted up my computer.
ran battlefield 2, it said that the disc was not in the drive. it was.
i tested other games, still didnt work.
when i go into my computer, there is no d drive listed.
i went to device manager, my dvd-rom (Samsung SH-D162C) had a little yellow exclamation mark next to it. i went to its properties and it says "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"
I tried updating drivers, installing new ones from samsung, rolling back drivers, and I reinstalled it. still doesnt work.
I have no software for it either.
anyone got any suggestions?

Your laser for the dvd-rom drive maybe dead dude you will jsut have toget a new one if thats the case.

I dont know much about dvdroms.
would i be able to take out the malfunctioning one, put in an old CDROM (not dvdrom), while i sort the problem out or get a replacement/new one?
