How likely is it that with in one year a DVD+/-RW drive is on the edge of failing?

I have an I/O Magic DVD RW (dl, df). And lately it doesnt always work for me. When I burn a dvd, and place a dvd rom or movie dvd, it wont recognize that there is anything in the drive. I usualy have to reboot for the drive to work again. I only use this drive for dvd discs, my cd rw is what I only use for cds. Is this typical? Should I look into getting a replacement drive?

I have made sure the ribbon cables are properly attached.

Any ideas?

The DVD+R brand I mainly use is TDK, but I also use Philips, and Fuji.

Game DVD-Roms, movie DVDs are used in the drive, and dont work like I explained after a DVD+R burn.

Well i guess this drive is on its death bed. I have ripped over 350 movies, not to count the mvoies played, dvd burned and game dvds loaded. To me this doesnt seem like alot, but maybe it was too much for this drive. I know I/O Magic isnt a great drive, which makes me think it has died. I am looking at a new NEC dvd burner.

Any thoughts or ideas?
