DVD burning problem plz help

I have a Dell running Windows XP. Not sure about more then that since Im pretty new to the world of computers. My computer has the ability to burn dvds, im sure because it came with sonic record now to record dvds. But when I put a blank dvd in it does not recognize it. The disc drives say there is no disc and i dont no what to do. Please help and if you can try and keep the explanations simple because Im pretty new with this. Thank you

i don't think you have a burner.....go into my computer and see if you're cd-rom device says DVD or DVD-+RW drive...if it says DVD+-RW then it's a burner but it if says DVD-R drive...then it's not a burner

Only the burning software can recognize it.

XP will not see anything because a blank DVD IS nothing.

in windows explorer the drive will display the type of media that is in the drive. doesn't sonic record include codecs and stuff like that? because i've bought bundles that have dvd authoring software in them purely for the codecs to watch dvd's on a the included dvd drive.
