Default DVD Burner starting to go?

My dad has a Pioneer DVD burner and was wondering if there are any programs that can determine if the burner is having issues making dvd's because its getting old and is starting to fail or something hardware/software related that doesnt involve buying a new burner.

I don't know any software that can check the dvd drive. But usually old drives tend to create problems when their "death" time is coming..So you better get a new one soon. But of course there might be a way to check your drive using some piece of software.
