drive disappearances

i have two hard disks... one of them is partioned into 2 drives c and d drives.. today suddenly the d drive seemed to disappear... when i tried to run d: it said drive doesnot exist!!!! but when i restarted my system it reappeared!! why did this happen??? am i at any risk of losing data??

First you need to use the correct terminology. A "drive " is physicall except for "RAM" disks which is in ram, for the time being, a drive can not be made into 2 different drives. What you did was partition the drive, which is totally in the software. What OS do you have and how did you partition the HD ? Also most HD manufacturers have free utillities on their web sites that you can down load that you can run that will tell you the health of your HD. You just need to know who made your hd and the model # most are in an ISO format or a bootable floppy disk creator.
