Default Dodgy sound

I built my computer around 2 years ago, and at christmas I bought a new PSU, Hard Drive, and some RAM. Just yesterday when I turned the pc on it made a very dodgy sound, and when I opened it up I could hear it was either from the PSU or CPU, though I'm not sure which. I turned the computer off straight away and have tried turning it on several times since and I still get this same noise. I'm a bit of newbie when it comes to hardware problems; is it safe to just let my computer boot as normal even though there's the odd sound? And does anyone have any ideas on what it could be? It sounds like it might be a fan noise.

Thanks

You can take the side off and try to find out which fan it is. You can put your finger on the center of the fan when its spinning to slow it down for a sec to find which one it is. Does this sound stop or continue. Some of the motherboards use a cheap Northbridge fan that make noise. That's the little fan on the motherboard. What are your system specs.

Thanks for the reply,

AMD X2 4400+ 2.2ghz
2GB RAM
500GB Hard Drive
Geforce 7800GTX
Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
650W PSU

UPDATE: I turned on my computer this morning and it didn't make the sound, however my computer wouldn't boot and it said something about the chip fan being too slow, which suggests that it was the CPU making the noise.
