Default Disk Read Error? Think the HDD is dead...

After much google-ing I'm having a hard time figuring this out... my boss gave me her laptop to see if I could fix it.. it is behaving strangely... if you boot it, it makes noise for a while and gives a disk read error... went into bios changed to CD boot, put in vista disk, and after like 3 tries the vista install screen came up.. but no drive C or anything shows up... not sure what to do... Ran Memtest86 but ram is fine.. bios show a HDD... does this mean its dead?

^^ epic mod post.

I agree seems like a bad hard drive. You can try to pull it and hook it up to a desktop to see if you can access it that way for the data.

If it is sata no problems. If it is ide you will need an adapter.
