hello all,

here is my problem: i cannot load the software for my x-fi extreme gamer soundcard. the card is recognized and when i try to install the software from the cd, i get an "error i-001 message. after 3 days of searching the internet and talking to creative labs (no help), it comes down to this excerpt from my setupapi log:

#E157 Default installer failed. Error 1168: Element not found.

i have tried, switching pci slots, disabling the onboard sound and a "clean boot". i also set driver signing to "ignore" ... none worked. the items in highlighted in red are my concern. from what i know, #I087 Driver node not trusted. -- if a driver is not trusted, that means it's unsigned, yet i changed the driver signing to "ignore". also, this "oem85.inf" file, i ran a search (oem*.inf) and it was not listed in the results. oem1.inf through oem84.inf were listed though. and how do i look at those files anyway? they were located in c\windows\inf, but when i "explored" windows, there was no folder named "inf". ???
lastly, the "#E122 Device install failed. Error 1168: Element not found." message, what element is it referring to?? sorry for the long post ... any will be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance!

to get to that folder, open up windows explorer, click tools at the top, and go to folder options. go to view, and click "show hidden files and folders", then below that, click hide extensions for known file types. then put "C:\WINDOWS\inf" into the address space and hit go.

have you tried completely reinstalling windows? searching for spy/adware/viruses?

EDIT: almost forgot, welcome to tech-forums! ^_^

thanks for the reply. i hadn't thought of reinstalling windows, i'll keep that in mind if nothing else works. and thanks for the information. i found the oem85 file, it's from creative labs. it shows a signature ...

look at that signature ... is that right??

*edit - apparently it is right (i think). i checked numerous .inf files and half were signed "$CHICAGO$ and the other "$WINDOWS NT$"

also found a .doc from microsoft: take a look at this part ...

If the log file contains a #I087 message for a signed INF file, perform the following steps:
1. If the INF file is not in the default system INF file directory, delete only the PNF file.
2. If the INF file is in the default system INF file directory, and its name is oem*.inf, delete the INF file and the PNF file.
3. Re-install the device.

in my case, i do have a signed .inf file ($CHICAGO$), so i did as instructed above and deleted the .inf and .pnf files ... guess what, it still didn't load the drivers! :( omg! i just had a thought, about 4 months ago, my wife bought an sb audigy and tried to install it ... it's possible there are some files left from that install. bah, it probably won't make a difference anyway!
