Well... depends what OS you want to install on it, honestly.

Windows or Linux, firstly? Does it already have a product key sticker on it for a version of Windows? If not, do you already have a spare key, or will you need to buy one? If you're a college student in an engineering department, you can usually get a copy of Windows for free from DreamSpark.

Install an OS just like you would a windows box. either CD or usb stick. You should configure the RAID set first before doing so (usually cntrl + R on the bios screen).

As Carnage is saying though, depending on what the end goal is should depend on the OS you use.

Honestly depends on what you're going to be doing with it...

I have a Dell PowerEdge 830 (Pentium 4 HT, 4GB RAM, 2x160GB HDD's) I got from a friend that's running Windows Server 2008 R2 on it. It has:

Local File server
FileZilla FTP Server
VisualSVN Server
WAMP / IIS7 webservers
TeamSpeak 3 server
MineCraft server
and now a Plex Media Server

Is the product key on yours unreadable, or can you make out all of the key? Does it say what version of Windows it's for?
