Hi.

I have a Desktop Gigabyte Computer at home which is about 4 years old now. I tried to turn it on recently and heard a funny high pitched "whiny" noise at the back. The computer subsequently didn't turn on (no lights at the front turned on whatsoever) and has been like that ever since. I am guessing it is the power supply but before I rush off to buy a new one I just wanted to make sure.

Could that noise be indicative of anything else?

Thanks.

Remove the side panel and see if you can't find out exactly what component is making the noise. While it's probably the power supply, it could be as simple as a fan shorting out the system.

Hi Slaymate,

I took off the side panel as you suggested and the noise appears to be coming from the area where the power supply and disk drive is. I would hazard a guess that the disk drive doesn't make noises like this?

Well I don't know what noise your hearing, but the drive should only make a noise when it's accessing or writing data.
