Computer won't turn on

I have a 3 year old Dell desktop and it was working fine except for the fan which sometimes made a lot of noise. Monday my son connected his ipod to it and the computer froze. after that I turn it on but only the fan turns on and nothing else. Any suggestions...

Check that the CPU fan is spinning correctly, as well as any other fans.

You said it was making noise, which is almost always a stuck/dusty fan. If your fans aren't working properly, things overheat and then things don't work. What may have happened is that your power supply fan jammed up and the PSU overheated and died. If the CPU fan isn't spinning, that would mean that the system isn't turning on to prevent damage.

this is why you shouldn't buy iPods... it decided using your computer wasn't part of the EULA so it's prevented you from doing so.

jokes aside, my first guess would be a short with the USB port. was it a front USB port?
