Computer won't pick up my Ethernet cable

Hello. Recently my computer won't pick my Ethernet cable up. My Xbox 360 will but once I plug it into my computer it acts like nothing is plugged in. My computer is a Toshiba laptop.

I bought it in 2009 so yes it's up to date. It was like one day it worked an the next it started doing this.

I'm pretty sure it is but how do I check to see?

Go to your network and sharing center, and click on change adapter settings, you will see an icon for your LAN, disable, and enable it

Check to see if the ethernet drive is broken.

Tried that, still not working.
