Default Computer Lock Up...

I've been having a bothersome problem with my computer for quite some time now. The screen randomly locks up, where everything is frozen, and the only way to fix is a hard reset. Now, onto the details so ya'll might be able to help me....

I bought an HP Pavilion m7160n (stats here)
and later upgraded some stuff:
added ram to 2gb @ 2x512mb sticks
added evga pci-e geforce 6600 256mb

I already did some testing:
ran MemTest to check ram... no errors
ran ChkDsk from startup.... 4kb of bad sectors which was fixed
tested without my graphics card in...
watched CPU Temp... locked up at random temp's
clean all dust out

after testing the above different times, it still will freeze up whenever it feels like it... It can freeze while running many app's, or if I just let it idle, i'll come back to it frozen up....
(I wouldn't think its the PSU since its off the shelf, plus i'm not equiped to test it)
(I'm not really willing to reformat the HD since I don't have an HD to backup to or all my app CD's either)

Here's the only strange thing that I've seen: sometimes before it would freeze up an app might be running wierd (not responding) so I'd go to task manager and check the performance.... It would show one of the Core's running at full power and the other Core running between 0 - 3%... Now I'm comp savvy but I don't know if dual core's are supposed to do that or not....

Right now I would think its the mobo or cpu (or a maybe possibility of the HD)... So I've looked into upgrading the MB + CPU since I wanted to anyways in a few months, but I want to see if anyone would know the problem before I went out and spent money...

I've actually noticed my Compaq VISTA doing it slightly in the past week or two, but hopefully its just my imagination / getting used to Vista...

any help is appreciated tho!!!!
