This has been a big problem for me for the past month or so. My roommate's computer is completly cracked out. Here is a small list:
Slow startup
Freezes on startup
Cannot read Devices on Startup
It lags during normal applications (mouse gets glitchy and windows too)
Crashes when doing normal applications and games.

Ok, just a small list of what I've seen happen. Its basically a brand new computer. MSI K8T NEO running Socket 754, Athlon 64 3000, 1GB of Ram (Cheap *** RAM) Radeon Pro 9800, 2 Western Digital Harddrives.

From what I know BIOS up-to-date. I think its the RAM or Motherboard issue. He's reformated about 8 times already and problem usually reaccurs after couple of days.

My initial awnser to this was "tell him to quit downloading porn. " Because everything that you listed can be caused by vrii.

HOWEVER, you said taht he already reformatted a few times.

My gut tells me its a motherboard issue. the K8T is a cheap product. I have a freind who's K8T went off the deep end and I dont' know what he's using now. Replace it, but don't buy a Gigabyte GA-K8NS. Mine died after 3 months. Get the motherboad in my sig.

Try out a new motherboard and reformat again. if the problem persists, try different RAM.

something might be overheating or the CPU could be setup incorrectly in BIOS. Have you checked temperatures?
Other than that It might well be the mobo

His temps are good...pretty sure he doesn't have a virus, he ran all his programs and scanned yesterday for them...I'm still looking at the MB as the main problem as both of you guys suggested, but I don't have a spare 754 to throw at him to make sure...Thanks for the help guys

you said it lasts for a couple days, check his internet history, and his registry (run) list, I have seen that happen a few times where I have "fixed" a pc for someone who I knew didn't damage hardware and it came down to them downloading and/or browsing sites that just shouldn't exist...

if it is deffinitely not a software issue, verify the ram is inserted correctly, in the right slots, sometimes they have to be paired up, if that is correct, then verify with a program like Everest Home Edition ( I love that thing) get a new mobo first since a bad mobo CAN damage the ram, then try the ram if it still persists, and when you get to that point, get higher end ram, make sure it is 100% compatible with the system
