Check your CPU & RAM frequencies are correct in BIOS.

Oh and you might want to make sure if your HD and IDE drive are on the same IDE channel that the HD is Master and IDE is Slave.

If they are on separate IDE channels, make sure they are both set to Master.

anyway i can find out what the right voltages are? only thing plugged into the ide thingy is the cdrom. hdd is sata

The right voltages for Molex (the four pin power connectors that you plug into everything)? They are 5V and 12V(the red wire is 5V I think). Voltages for your processor vary depending on your model. All I know is that for a P4 Prescott LGA775 it is around 1.4. Look it up on Toms hardware, they have a gigantic CPU chart there. As for not bewing able to format, sounds like you need drivers for your HD. I don't know why though, they are usually supported unless RAIDed. If you obtain soem drivers, you should be able to format.
