Compaq Armada touchpad not working

Hello again!
Please can anyone offer help, i have an old Compaq Armada 1700, i can't get the touchpad to work. I've installed the right drivers (i think) Synaptics 5.0.37. The touchpad is listed in device manager ok. Running win98 se, but it just won't work!

Did you buy it used? Have you ever had it working before? Maybe it's a physical problem.

I did buy it used, years ago, it worked originally, but i disabled it (cant remember how) soon after because it was annoying. Haven't used it for ages but i've just gone wireless at home so i thought i'd reformat it and put a clean install of win98se on it. Now i need the touchpad to work, guess i'll have to take it to bits and see if theres a loose connection somewhere. thanks for replying though. Happy new year btw
