I am using a program to communicate between computers through the use of a DB-9 serial cable. However, when I try to open my com port I get a response that says that the port is in use by another program. Does anyone know of a program or method that tells me what programs are using my com ports?

you may not like my suggestion but i think you may as well ditch the serial connector. the RS-232 interface does have it's useful purposes but data transfer definitely is not one. just go buy two ultra cheap 10/100 network cards and a crossover cable. in australia i could probably get that all for under $15 so maybe $10 US if you look around and maybe buy the cards second hand

Sorry I didn't really clarify my usage. I am actually using one computer to send commands to lab equipment that use RS-232. However, I'm having trouble getting it to work and I wanted to use a 2nd computer to visually see if I was inputting the data correctly or if it was something else that was my problem.
