Default clogged hard drive numbers dont add up

my hard drive is a 9 gig (as seen by the OS) and i have 1.75 gigs left but i tried to find out what was taking up so much space but the numbers dont add up i only have about 5 gigs used, that is from me going under C: and checking the size of the folders and files Help!

Improper partition map? Partially corrupted drive? Restore partition? It could be many things.

most likely a large part of that is system restore points, perhaps a few hundred megabytes for a service pack install......

yeah, add the restore points, the swap file size, recycle bin, temp files, etc
