When I put a software CD in the drive, nothing happens. Well it seems to spin up but it doesn't start automatically. I have to start it manually. But other than that, it works fine.

Likewise, when I put an audio CD or DVD in the drive it doesn't offer me the option of choosing a program to open it with, it just does nothing. I have to start ITunes or WMP manually and press "play"

Any ideas what's going on? Is there an option somewhere that I've checked that means it won't start anything automatically?

Thanks.

Does this happen with every CD?

It is possible that a setting to auto-boot has been disabled.

Yep, happens to every CD. Audio, DVD, software.

I figured there may be a setting somewhere to auto-boot, but where could it be??

Fixed it! Even though Autoplay seemed to be enabled for my CD drive in Windows, I downloaded this program, which checks autoplay settings:

http://www.cdmenupro.com/autorun/autorun-check.htm

and it seems the setting for "CD ROM" wasn't checked. Even though everything seemed to be enabled in Windows. Hmmmm. These things are sent to test us.
