CD Rom Not Working

I'm working on my friends laptop for him, but I have ran into a big problem. His CD Rom drive is not there, so I figure I would uninstall the driver and reinstall it. Well, I did that, but it didn't fix a thing. The drive still shows up as not there. I don't know what else to do on this, but the laptop model is Dell Inspiron 9300.

Do you have a warrenty? I would contact Dell.

i agree with the above post. it may be possible that the second IDE channel (the one the drive is on) may be disabled in BIOS so that is worth checking. the drive is probably just stuffed though guessing by my past experiences with laptops

does it show in the BIOS and in the Device manager? or is it just not showing in My Computer. also if you put a cd in does the drive spin up and if it has a LED does it flash?
