When i unplug my cd rom drive the windows xp logo screen loading bar goes across 4-5 times and when its plugged in the bar goes across 50 times...

I tried master, slave, and custom select.

I don't have alot of money so i can't afford a new cd rom drive.

Hello,

What CD-ROM drive is it?

Also, how is it plugged up to the motherboard? On it's own in one IDE connector on the motherboard, or is it on the same IDE cable as another drive is?

Its the same as the other ide cable and its plugged in by itself.

the company is hypermedia and it is 48x24x48 seamless link.

what its doing behind that loading screen is checking the hardware and it is obviously getting stuck on the cd drive try the drive in another system and see if it works.

did u change the settings at the windows setup (Bios)?
is the dip switch (little chip) in the right place?

if it does the same thing in another system then obviously the drive is faulty no drive should slow the boot sequence down that much and therefore it has to be faulty there is no other alternative. you may need to buy a new CD drive. Nothing in the bios would help much eather if it does it in 2 machines.

also try preforming a SOS boot to see what it is doing durring that time tell us what it says

SOS boot :

start > run > msconfig > BOOT.INI tab > check /SOS > apply > ok > reboot

I did that sos boot and nothing about the cd rom drive came up.

I tried the cd rom drive in a different machine and the loading bar went across 5 times...

So is there a way to fix that on this computer?
