CD Rom and CDRW causes rebooting

I want to salvage some info from an older computer but unable to use the CD Rom or CDRW. It will not read a CD and reboots or power shuts down. I am able to use the floppy drive. I've checked all connections, memory was taken out and replaced. Checked bios/cmos, things seem normal there (although I'm somewhat computer challenged).

Any help or hints?

I think the easiest way to do this is to remove the hd from the older computer, install it as slave in a new one, and copy off everything you need.

Or you could also use a usb flash drive or external cd burner if you've got either of these.

Okay, thought about that, just didn't want to screw with the new computer. Can you briefly go through the steps, I've done it before...just not lately. I think the jumpers have to be changed. Thanks!
