Default CD R not recording

I`m in the process of getting a new computer which should be ready today (Feb 2). Yesterday I tried to copy my documents onto a cd and it wouldn`t do so. I have a feeling that the CD R may be shot, even though I don`t know why it would be.
Is there a simple way to tell if it`s gone and also is there a way to move the doc`s over to the new system without using floppys? I don`t think that the new computer has a floppy drive. And besides, it would take tons to copy all the stuff. Obviously, I`ve been lucky to this point that I haven`t lost all of my stuff for lack of doing back-ups!

I would try different software first like nero, www.nero.com, and if that doesn't work then you could network the two computers together using the NICs if they both have them.

PS use a crossover cable to do so

Also, you could use both of the computers serial ports (old technology and very slow) but it will work, or just put your old hard drive in the new machine as a slave.

Hope it helps
