Default CD Drive in Mac Book broken already?

ok so i was playing Starcraft on my moms new Mac Book... and it was running fine...the next day i was playing it, and it started up (with weird reving noise) then kinda froze on the menu...the disc kept reving up and slowed down.. i took out the cd and there were rings of scratches...the scratches were deep and noticable...(obviously from the CD Dive or something..) the CD is pretty much dead...

so, my question is, is this a common error? or is my mom's NEW laptop's CD Drive broken?

Try putting in some blank CD-Rs and see what it does to them. I have never dealt with a cd drive that destroys CD's so I wouldn't say this is common at all. Good news if its brand new it still is under warrenty.

Macs break? When did this start happening?
I'd do the same, try some blanks and see if there's anything caught/stuck in the drive itself when you open it. If it's not something that you can fix Apple will they're usually pretty good about it. Call a warranty number or take it to an Apple Store.
