Hi everyone I've been having some trouble with a BSOD issue. I get a 0x9c error when playing certain video games. I built this machine myself last fall. It ran crysis for hours with no problems. World of Warcraft would cause a BSOD usually once a night, and Call of Duty 4 would do it once every other night. Now I'm playing Age of Conan and it seems to happens anywhere from 7min in to an hour or so.

I had tried many different things and couldn't get it fixed. It seemed to be pretty unpredictable so I thought it was heat. I've checked all my temps and their well in line. The hottest my CPU gets is 38C and my vid card and chipset stays in the 40s. So I pretty much ruled out heat.

Next I was figuring memory so I ran memtest over night and it returned no errors. I suspected the mother board which was an XFX 680ilt. I replaced it today with an EVGA 750i FTW. Still doing it. I've checked the power supply and its putting out the same voltage as a new one. I'm going to borrow a new one from work thats sitting around and see if it makes a difference.

I also tried reading the dump file but its not making much sense to me. Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to try and get this resolved?

Thanks for any help this is really frustrating.

Heres the dump file debug.

This is a driver related issue. So my guess would be your video drivers.

Sorry thought I posted my machine specs in there.

Intel Core 2 quad Q6600
EVGA 750i FTW motherboard
4GB OCZ sli ddr26400
EVGA 8800GTS(512)
Seagate 160G HDD
XP 64

I've updated my video drivers to the latest several times. So I'm not sure if thats it. When I built this rig I used a 64 bit OS for the 1st time. Could that be causing some of my problems?

just looking at your specs I see that you have a 160GB hard drive. Would I be correct in saying that it is an old one from a previous computer? Just that most of your other components seem relatively new.

64bit windows does have certain problems with drivers and software and the like. Did you get the 64bit video card drivers when you installed them? Just making sure. If so then new hard drive is my suggestion

Ya its an old HDD. Sata II though. I wiped it completely before I reinstalled. I've actually done another reinstall two weeks ago. Ya I've made sure about the 64 bit drivers. I have a copy of 32bit XP SP2 but if I use it I can't go back to 64bit due to my student licensing I'm using.(out of installs)

I suppose I can try another HDD I've been meaning to get another one guess now is as good as ever. Just puzzels me why games like Crysis and The Witcher ran fine but WoW, COD4, and AOC fail.

Guess I have to wait another 3 days for the HDD to get here.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Okay try getting a copy of HDDLife or HD Drive Analyst. That will tell you how the life of the drive is.

If this is the only machine you have install Vista 64Bit on you can install it as many times as you want on the same machine and never run out of licenses. It is only a different machine that matters. ;)

IT could be the drivers. If you have any minidump files upload them to sendspace or bondogo.

Just zip them up and upload them. I will analyze them for you and let you know what i find.

The problem with my licensing is that I got the OS free from school through a MSDN alliance. So I only get so many installs and its supposed to not work anymore. Its a bit of a joke but its a free OS. Hopefully it will hold me over until windows 7.

I'll get those dump files uploaded as soon as I get home from work. I went ahead and ordered a new HDD since it was a plan to eventually upgrade. I also ordered another set of ram sticks. If nothing else it will give me a full 8G. I've got an old geforce 7600 I can try in it and an alternate power supply as well. I'm just really hoping I can fix it before I've bought another computer.

I got the HDDlife program and it sees the HDD name and the little moniter window will show activity but it says its not supported and can't be reached.

Heres a minidump file.

Thanks again for your help

I switched out the HDD and did a fresh install. It did it to me twice last night. I double checked my temps and they all seem fine. I'm not sure whats going on now so I'm guessing its a program/driver issue since it happens in the same game. If this is the case guess theirs nothing to do but wait till they fix it.

your mobo drivers can garantee it. i had the prob with my 750i mobo, i changed all my drivers then finaly changed my mobo drivers to the most recent ones and it worked.

Its actually my second motherboard in this rig. I was running an XFX 680ilt. I've got one more ram dimm to swap out to eliminate that. after that I'm not sure. I'll check to see if their are any newer drivers for the 750i MB though.
