Broken external hard drive

The other day I managed to trip over the usb cord going to my external hard drive and broke off the connection on my external HD. I was wondering if I could just remove the hard drive itself and buy a usb connection straight to the hard drive and use it this way. Or if there is other steps I'm not seeing I have the Seagate freeaction 500gig HD.

You can try to break it out of it's case, but if you dropped it on the floor....it might be dead anyway

Oh I can easily get it out of the case I already opened it in attempt to resoder the piece back into place but it was destroyed

Is the drive inside the case SATA or IDE? You could get a USB docking station or another enclosure.
