Default baking hard drive controller boards?

I was reading about the dell 15r motherboard issues and how people bake them to resolder the connections.
are the hard drive failures mostly due to same issues with cold solder on controller boards or what are the most common failure causes?

or does it depend on manufacturer/type of drive

they are piling up lol
my dad just sent me 4 dead drives to see if I can recover anything from them (laptop drives)

I HATE FIREFOX!!!!!!!I don't care if its what you use!!! I use IE and will continue using it...

Default Re: baking hard drive controller boards?

HDD's usually fail because of issues with the read/write arm and/or platters inside. Controller board issues are usually not caused from heat, either - which baking wouldn't solve.

For the "click of death" - usually a recommended last-ditch recovery method involves putting the drive in a ziplock baggie, and then placing it in the freezer for several hours. Then quickly hooking it up to a PC and extract data before it warms up too much. Rinse and repeat (can also try putting a cold-pack on top of the drive while recovering data in an attempt to prolong the low temps).
