Default Bad hard disk sectors..how to fix

Well the other day i was doing some wiring clean up in my case and after everything was in order i went to boot up and i recieved a message before windows booted. It said that i had bad hard disk sectors and to insert a disk. Im not sure what this totally means, i never had this happen with all the hard drives ive used and whatnot. So is there a program/way to fix the sectors with out having to do a format by chance?

thanks again steve

If it was before windows loading screen im not sure but when something like that pops up during windows loading screen it means a few windows files are corrupt, so maybe if its like that, it might want the windows cd. What i did when i have stuff like that happen i boot up on a different windows installed hardrive then check the screwed up disk for errors using the windows tools.
