Default backwards compatiable CPU?

I have a AMD Athlon64 3200+ Venice core cpu in my machine. I recently got a AMD Athlon64 4000+ Clawhammer core cpu of ebay. Can I check if it works on my machine. Will I have problems going backwards to an older cpu? Thank you

the only thing that matters is the cpu socket.
