I have also noticed on my previous board (Asus A8N32-Sli deluxe) that the sound was below average quality, but everything else was superb.

Now I have the same board being discussed here and I haven't had any of the stated problems. I'm glad you finally got it working, but I would still contact Asus if I were you, as my sound is excellent going through a 5.1 surround system.

Well to update in my system, it still sucks. The sound is basically half working. I have to turn the volume up ALL the way on my speakers to get audible sounds. And it still occasionally pops in, and when it does it is VERY loud, because my speakers are turned to the max.

So basically I have sound that is muted, but I can overcome it by turning the volume all the way up. Normally this is enough to blow your ear drums out, but because of the sound issue it sounds like a low normal volume.

I really have no clue why it is doing this at all

I would just get a cheap sound card for $35.00 and forget about the onboard sound.

i wouldn't go with a cheap $35 sound card if you want good quality

Turtle Beach Montego 7.1 Dolby Digital Live Surround PCI Sound Card TBS-3300-01 at TigerDirect.com

this is not much more expensive and its the best sound card out there for its price. but if you're not worried about hd surround sound then i'd just get your average 5.1 channel $20 sound card
