Default ARGH usb problem!

Connected my ipod (that i have been using for a year) has suddenly stoped being reconized by my computer. It comes up with a message saying that the device has malfunctioned. I recon ur sitting there saying to urself, well get into contact with apple about this. No its not just my ipod that doesnt work anymore its also my new external dvd-r drive. That has now apparently malfuctioned. My phone however does still work.

I have tried connecting both dvd-r and ipod into different usbs (on same computer) and still the same problem. What is going on!?

Thanks
