^^This is what I would do. Either PCI-e or PCI would be fine.

CPU: intel core 2 quad q8200
Ram: 4gb 240 pin, DDR2 SDRAM
500 GB SATA 3G harddrive
550 watt psu
GPU BFG 9800gt 1gb eco

I need it for updating my satellite. My old computer had a serial port and it worked fine until it broke down some how...

Also I'll look that serial port card up. See if I can find one. - PCI Express x1 to serial port card

No idea what to look many numbers and letters all too confusing.
