Just to clarify I am saying to not use the sata to usb adapter.

Open your desktop and connect the hard drive directly to a sata port on your motherboard with a regular sata cable.

Use a sata power connector from your psu.

Basically you are setting it up as an extra hard drive. no need to mount it.

Chances are with it being 1tb there is not enough power to get the disk to spin up and it just cuts out while using the usb adapter.

Very true, bang on

thats basically whats been happening, so the only way to recover my data is to connect it internally right?

looks like i need to get a SATA cable etc

you could just use the one connected to your cd drive if it is sata.

I had this same problem with my WD Passport. The sata to usb adapter stopped working. Pulled the casing apart, and hooked it up via sata in my desktop. (I'm glad 2.5" drives use the same SATA connections as 3.5" drives.)

Ok, i will try it out

Yeah this is really annoying, never buying a network HDD again.

Once i've retrieved all of my data, i will call WD up and get a replacement

thanks for all your help
