x16, x8, pci-e, blah blah

i am not sure if this is "normal", but in RivaTuner it says the following:

$000000000f PCIE link width : 16x supported, 8x selected

...is there a way to select x16? is that for SLI only? CAN you select x16 (i.e. will modern cards allow you to?)

There might be a way to choose 16x in your bios or something, but I wouldn't sweat it. There's so much bandwidth, your video card won't know what to do with the extra anyway.
