Will the 7900GT use more power than the 7800GT?

The GTX is like $450 on newegg. The GT is about $265 at cheapest, that's why I'm not even looking into the GTX, the price difference is way too high and the 7900gt is said to be at $300. I don't think it would be a good idea to buy a card for a much higher price and lower performance than the 7900gt see what I mean.

And the brand of my psu is Delta, and people here have told me I'd be alright with that as long as I dont add something like another harddrive. I can't get a new one because I have a prebuilt and the case, which is differently shaped, is really nice (liquid-heatpipe hybrid cooling system, silent)

They say that the 7900GT will start out at $350 dollars when it first hits the states. I will say that the 7900GT might use around the same power as a 7800GT. Just make sure you PSU has enough amps on your 12V rail(s) to run these things, I think 26A is minimum but I suggest you go higher then that; also some PSUs have dual rails, so you add both of the amps from each 12V rail to get your total.

lol. good analogy. the ATI has a higher core clock but the Geforce 512 has a higher memory clock. but geforce card is outrageously more expensive and harder to obtain.

Yes, the X1900XTX has a high core clock speed. comparing those two Geforce cards is like comparing the old ATI Radeon 9600 with the 9700. Why would you spend the extra money if you really aren't going to notice the difference?

Your missing a major component of a GPU, the pixel pipelines.

X1900XT = 16 pipelines / 625 core clock speed
7800GT = 20 pipelines / 400 core clock speed
7800GTX (256) = 24 pipelines / 430 core clock speed
7800GTX (512) = 24 pipelines / 550 core clock speed
7900GT = 24 pipelines / 450 core clock speed
7900GTX = 24 pipelines / 650 core clock speed

(these are stock clocks from ATI's and nVidia's reference models)

Each pipeline is running at the GPU's core clock speed.

7900GTX 24 x 650 = 15,600
X1900XT 16 x 625 = 10,000

But since the architecture of the X1900 allows 48 shader proccesses per clock versus 24 that the 7900GTX has so this allows the X1900XT to proccess graphics better. The 7900GTX will outperform the X1900XT in non-shader intensive games, but like FEAR has shown us the X1900XT will outperform the 7900GTX in games with a lot of shaders. As more games start to use more and more shaders, like a fine wine, the X1900 XT will get sweeter with time.

Here are the official prices from an employee at tigerdirect over on the [H]ard forums.

BFG 7900 gtx 512 mb 549.99
BFG 7900 gt 256 mb 349.99
PNY 7900 gtx 512mb 549.99
XFX 7900 gtx XXX 512mb 649.99
XFX 7900 gtx extreme 512mb 599.99
XFX 7900 gtx 512mb 549.99
XFX 7900 gt XXX 256mb 374.99
XFX 7900 gt extreme 256mb 349.99
XFX 7900 gt 256mb 349.99

Those are very good prices but I'm hoping newegg will be better :D

I can't wait to put a couple of 7900gts in SLI when I build my comp in June. :cool:

Pipeline wars are on their way out the door too buddy. Like you said, ATI is using the 1:3 ratio on their cards now vs the typical 1:1. So you reall can't compare the X1900XTX to the 7800GTX 512 and such by just using clocks and pixel pipelines. Since the field is becoming far more diversified, you need to take shader processors, ROPs, ect ... into account. Even then the architectures are changing too.

And then there are the drivers and game optimizations to take into account.

The easiest way to see how a video card stacks up against another is to use benchmarks really.

But I can tell you, that unless Nvidia gets the 7900GTX's core clock to 700mhz, and it's memory clock to at least 1600mhz, if not 1700 or 1800mhz, the X1900XTX will emerge victorious. That is assuming the 7900GTX has 24 pipes and 24 vertex processors, as unlike ATI's 1:3 ratio, Nvidia works at 1:1.

If the 7900GTX has 32 pipes though, the X1900XTX is cooked ...

At least ATI will still most likely own in the price : performance.

Yep, Who knows what Nvidia really did with these new cards. Maybe they actually will be amazingly powerful and own the x1900xtx or maybe they will only be a little better then the 7800gtx. I'm actually thinking they will be better then the x1900xtx, I don't think Nvidia would let ATI win so easily when there 7800 cards are only trailing by a little bit. It should be interesting to see how these cards compare.

Nvidia will loose the crown of the video card market until Q4 if they don't take it from ATI now.

That is unless they get their G80's out earlier than Q4, but that's not likely.

Yea, but I'm sure SLI 7900GTs will be the best performance for their value if they're around $300 each. Thats like having 2 7800gtx 512's for $600.
